Cannot access SCSISelect on Adaptec 29160 |
|
|
The ultimate goal is to connect an Exabyte tape loader to a yet-to-be
purchased server running RedHat Enterprise 2.1.
We decide to test this using said tape loader, a PowerEdge 430, and an
Adaptec 29160. When the PowerEdge boots, there is no message during
POST indicating the detection of the SCSI BIOS, nor the prompt to
enter SCSISelect. When RedHat attempts to load the aic7xxx module, it
generates an error. Adaptec support indicates that some cards (although
not the 29160 by name) need to have RAID disabled in BIOS in order to
load the module.
So, I try the card in a few other PCs. I discover to my dismay that
recent Dell machines refuse to display their POST messages. (Dell support
confirms this 'feature' cannot be disabled.) Try an older box, no
prompt. Take it home and try it in a friend's box - no prompt.
Buy a second 29160 to see if the card is damaged. Same results.
Buy an older Adaptec card without Ultra160 support, PowerEdge displays
the SCSISelect prompt and SCSISelect loads and runs fine.
My alternatives seem to be to a) Somehow, someway figure out how to
get SCSISelect to show up for the 29160, or b) buy somebody else's
SCSI card. Plenty of answers for option 2 on the net. Only saw one
message dealing with option 1, and it involved shorting the card and
Corporate won't let me try that one.
Any ideas?

Why do you need to access the SCSI BIOS? The Exabyte tape library should
work out of the bix with an Adaptec 29160, no need to make changes to any
settings. The RAID functionality that Adaptec support refers to is for the
29320.
In general I think the Adaptec 29160 is overkill for a tape drive/library.
If you really want to get an alternative, look around for a cheap LSI Logic
/ Symbios chipset based card.

Need to access, none. Need to have it, absolutely, otherwise the
card is either dead, badly inserted or there is a bios conflict.

Not on an Adaptec, no.
(Unless Exabytes have a habit of reacting strangely to higher speed negotiations).
On an LSI it may be different if someone has fiddled with the device scan
settings, but should be ok too "out of the box".

When I try and execute "modprobe aic7xxx", I get a "no such device"
error. The Adaptec support entry referring to the BIOS was the only
one close to relevant. (lsmod shows that scsi_mod and sd_mod are
loaded fine, it's just aic7xxx that won't load.)
That said... any ideas why I can't access SCSISelect to begin with?

Working on that as well.
