Hi all,

I have an IBM xSeries 330 server (pizzabox model) with an onboard U160
Adaptec SCSI controller (AIC 7892). There's only one 36.9 GB IBM
harddisk connected to it, which does show up during the boot sequence,
but it doesn't show the size and hd# in the SCSI BIOS. It says something
like this:

Adaptec SCSI BIOS v3.10

Slot Ch ID LUN Vendor Product Size Sync Bus HD#
00 A 8 0 IBM FTlV1 S2 ASYN 0

Also when I hit Ctrl+A to enter the SCSI BIOS, then select SCSI disk
utilities and finally select the harddisk in the list it says "This
Device is not a Disk Drive".

The disk isn't available in the Linux installer either. I tried Debian
and Gentoo, both have kernels with support for my scsi controller on the
cd, which actually work: I see the controller when I use the dmesg
command in the Linux installer. However as soon as the installer gets to
the point of partitioning, it says "no hard disk drive was found" etc.

Is the harddisk defective, or is it something else?
I think the termination is set correctly; the host adapters termination
is enabled and the cable has termination. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Regards,
Ruben.

Does it spin up? Could it be formatted with a non-standard sector size?

I'm not sure if it spins up, because there's a lot of fans in the server
which all produce sound and vibrations. I can't remove the harddisk
and power it on either, since the harddisk is in a bracket which gets
its power from the backplane behind it. There's also two leds at the
front of the bracket, I looked up what a single flicker of the amber
light means and it says that it means everything's ok. So that makes me
think it does spin up or it wouldn't show up in the scsi bios (I think?)
and the led probably wouldn't give an ok status.

It could be formatted with a non-standard sectorsize, which might
explain why the size doesn't show up in the SCSI bios, but why wouldn't
the hd# show up and why is there not way to reach it from linux?

Regards,
Ruben.
