What SCSI card? |
|
|
We are trying to use a DLT8000 tape drive to backup a desktop PC. The tape
drive works when plugged into a Dell server with integral 7899 Ultra 160/m
SCSI controller.
We have tried using a 68pin (DLT) to 50pin (SCSI card) cable, but it
obviously wants a 68pin SCSI card. We have tried a 2944UW SCSI card, but
that won't recognise the DLT. Which SCSI card can we buy which will support
this DLT?

What interface does this drive have? The spec. sheet seems to say that
it is available with a variety of interfaces, but I can't figure out how
many different interfaces any one drive has.
Isn't the 7899 LVD? I know the 2944 is HVD. If you connected an LVD
device to an HVD card, you may have fried the drive.

The DLT 8000 only has 1 interface, which can be chosen at purchase time as
HVD or LVD. It is not obvious from the drive which option we have.
We thought the drive was HVD because when we replaced it with a Super DLT in
its original application, we had to get a new SCSI card to drive the SDLT (I
think because the SDLT required LVD). I am not sure about anything else
anymore. I have a complete matrix of what SCSI interfaces all our servers
have and what is working on them. I have researched the Adaptec site, but
the cards they offer do not match up to the SCSI interface definitions in
the DLT 8000 specification. They may well have a card that works, but it is
not obvious which.
I know the drive is OK, because it still works when we plug it into the
server. We just need it to work for this off-network desktop PC.

The 2944UW is a high voltage differential controller, if the DLT is single
ended you're lucky there wasn't a fire.
I use a cheapie LSI/Sybios card with a DLT 4000 drive backing up a Dell
GX400; cost $15 on eBay. I prefer the Adaptec 2940UW, which sells in the
same range.
