Onstream SC30e tape ejects |
|
|
I have an external Onstream SC30e that has performed flawlessly for
almost 4 years. When I turned on my PC and tape drive yesterday, the
drive rejected the tape. I have uninstalled and reinstalled both the
drive (1.09 f/w) and Echo software (3.7.02), but the drive keeps
rejecting any tape placed in it. The drive shows up on boot with the
correct SCSI ID.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to the cause of the problem and how
to resolve it?
XP Pro SP1. Adaptec 39160.
The drive has saved my life on more than one occasion and I would prefer
to get it going again as an additional backup to my second HDD and CDs.

It may be indicating that it needs a cleaning. If you have a cleaning
cartridge, insert it and run a cycle.

When mine started to do that, I noticed the TAPE was Broken. I fixed on broken tape, then a few months later, I noticed
another one was broken . . . How are yours doing?

Mine are doing fine, none broken yet.
As mentioned earlier, applying a cleaning tape might help but no
guarantee is given. For me it worked once.
Anyway, is is quite unlikely that there is something wrong with the drive.
I use an internal SC50 and Echo (Windows) and BRU (Linux).
The only drawback of the system is that it is not possible to rebuild an
index from tape (Echo).

Thanks.
Did as you suggest. Ran the cleaning tape, but no joy. The tapes appear
intact.
The drive whirs as though it is seeking to identify the tape, but the
green light stays a steady green whereas, from memory, it used to flash
during the start-up phase.
1Safe express shows "No Tape". I tried to initialise the tape, but this
merely crashed XP which immediately re-booted.
I guess that something in the drive has possibly expired.

I too have all the same symptoms with an internal OnStream SC30. I too
have updated the firmware to 1.09 and Echo software to the 3.7.02
version. I also tried a cleaning tape; this appeared to work in that
the LED blinked. However, when I put in a used tape, and I tried a
fresh, unused tape as well, I get a solid LED and eventually the tape
is spit out. "No Tape" was displayed with the previous Echo version.
Now I also get a "Drive Error" in the Echo Status screen with the
latest version.
My diagnosis is that this 4.5 year old drive has finally had it.
Luckily I have a 50 gig tape drive that is still working. My solution
will be to save the daily change backup to a local 200 gig drive and
retire the tape drive. If I need rotated backups, I will purchase a
DVD-RW drive.
