SCSI - drives of diff. spec on same channel |
|
|
Fitted 2nd drive, a new U320 SCSI, to Proliant ML350 - about 4 years old.
This Compaq has a SCSI card identified as Compaq 64-bit dual-channel - it
seems to be Adaptec but I can't find the exact specs. Not using RAID or
hot-plug.
I first added the drive as an additional device on the same channel as the
existing HD. ID number set to 1 (first drive is 0). The Compaq-supplied
SCSI cable has an active terminator on the end. The system picked up the
new drive, but formatting failed (Windows 2000). You could start to
format, but after 10-20% the whole system would freeze, BRS required.
Checked all cables, jumpers, same result.
I've now added the new drive as the sole device on the 2nd SCSI channel.
Seems to work fine, formatted and working OK.
The older drive will be slower, but I thought it was generally OK to mix
different SCSI speeds on one cable, provided you don't mix SE and LVD.
Anyone got any ideas why I got this result?

So you have 2 cables.
What happens if you now add the first drive to the second channel?
