Adaptec 2110S Raid 5 was ok until Raid1 failed |
|
|
Hello all!
Win2K box with Adaptec 2110S with Raid 1 and a Raid 5 with 4 disks.
Raid 1 has disks 0 and 1
Raid 5 has disks 2,3,4,5
Disk 0 of Raid 1 fails - hotswap with spare drive found on shelf with
3 other drives. System locks and hard boot
I removed the replacement drive and only disks 1 thru 5 are in the
system. Disk 1 continues to operate as designed, delivering C and D
drives and Win2K works. However, now THREE Raid sets appear.
Raid 1 lists disk 1 and non-existing disk 6
Raid 5 lists disks 0,4,5
Raid 5 lists disks 2,3,nonexist8, and nonexist9
Holy cow!
Where did these non-existing disks come from? Can I move disks 4 and
5 back with the other Raid5 with 2 and 3 and get rid the nonexisting
disks? Can I change the IDs of these drives? Seagate ST336607LCs.
Could the replacement drive have data on it already and whacked
everything?
Am I hosed?
Can I cry?
Either I will never hotswap again or use a "found" spare disk again.
any thoughts would be grand! |

Resolved!
The replacement hard drive had been a part of a previous raid system.
When this hard drive was inserted, it added it's RAID info to the
other drives and confusing everyone. (Each drive in the RAID keeps
RAID data about the others in it's little world.)
Using the SMOR bios interface, I zapped the RAID table info, but kept
the data intact.
Alt F10
press the letter Z
Alt A
yes to zap the RAID info, but no to keep volume info.
This occurred for all RAIDs listed
For the offending drive I said yes to delete the volume.
I then rebuilt the RAIDs with the correct drives.
Hope this helps others |
