SCSI CD intermittently blinks |
|
|
Hi. I have a little problem with one of my machines, which I'd like to
submit to you.
My PC has an AHA-2940UW Ctrl, with two Compaq 4Gb HDD (ID 0 and 1) and a NEC
CD-3010A CD-ROM reader. I also have an IDE CD-ROM burner. It runs Windows
NT4 SP4.
Termination is enabled on the CD-ROM, which is at the end of the cable,
while it is set to "AUTO" on the adapter.
What happens is that when disks are intensively working (e.g. I'm copying or
moving some Gbs of data) intermittently the work stops completely for about
10-20 seconds, then the CD-ROM front led blinks, then everything starts
working again. During these moments I can move the mouse cursor, but I can't
do anything else-the systems seems freezed. This is reflected by the Task
Manager which shows the CPU is not working at all. This repeats continuously
every about 30 sec. until the disks finish their job. This, as you may
imagine, is rather annoying and reduces disk performance by about 30-40%. It
happens only when a long or intense disk activity is under way.
Of course I tried to swap the CD-ROM drive, to remove it completely, to
change termination jumpers, etc. etc. but with no results. The cable seems
OK (I used it in an older machine and it worked correctly), but I have no
replacements for it. Google seems to have no news of such a behaviour.
I guess something is mismatched with Windows (I have installed and
uninstalled several burning applications, including Nero, Feurio, Burrrn,
etc.).
Thank You for Your patience and for your help.

On the end of what cable? On what cable are the disk drives on?

Typical of a SCSI bus reset.

Yes it does. Google for "SCSI bus reset".
