Are ther any caveats about connecting an external drive (DAT40) to an
internal scsi connector on a SCSI PCI card?
(Apart from the obvious fact that I have to get the cable from the
outside of the PC to the inside somewhere).
For example, what should the maximum cable length be?

I've tried googling for suggestions for this particular situation but
haven't found much yet...

Not longer than 50 cm should be ok...

Sounds like maybe you need to hone your googling skills as this type of

question shows up at least once per month. Maximum cable length is
spsecified for each SCSI standard, try searching for "cable length scsi" and
sift through the thousands of hits. There is no way to answer your
question given the lack of information provided.

Out of curiosity why don't you use the external connector?

Not really.

5 feet is safe under all circumstances. 10 freet is safe if only the tape
is on the SCSI chain. If LVD mode is in use then 30 feet might be possible.

Not longer than 50 cm should be ok...

HUH...50 cm is not relevant to anything SCSI.

Depends on the card:
SE up to 3 meters for less than 5 devices or 1.5 meters for 5-8 devices
for Ultra SCSI, 3 meters unrestricted (except for spacing requirement)
for Fast SCSI.
LVD up to 12 meters depending on bus rate and more than 2 devices,
up to 25 meters for point to point.

Oh wow, a retailer website.

And no 50 cm anywhere in sight.
