Macintosh SCSI internal cable type and termination questions |
|
|
Hi:
I'm upgrading a powerpc6100av hard drive and possibly the cdrom to
cdrw/dvd burner. Currently, the processor is upgraded to G3 card in
the nubus slot.
The new hard drive is IBM DGHS-04Z 4.5GB REAL 50-Pin SCSI.
Currently, there is a flat internal 50-pin ribbon/cable 21" long, the
cdrom is in the middle and the hard drive is on the end (only two
connectors besides the connection to the system board on this ribbon.)
Not terminators, that I know of.
Recently, I've learned that the hard drive should be in the middle and
the cdrom at the end of this internal ribbon.
Question 1: Do you agree?
Also, I'm looking for a new ribbon, trying to switch connectors on
hard drive and cdrom comes up short, need several more inches
(probably 24 would be just enough, but would like more.)
Question 2: is a standard flat 50-pin ribbon ok with this new hard
drive? Should I put in an LVD ribbon?
And, what about termination?
Question 3: do I need a terminator at some point on this ribbon (flat
or LVD?) Would this mean buying a 3 device or 4 device ribbon and
putting a terminator on the end of it? (and is there a need to
terminate BOTH ends of this internal cable?)
Thanks,
Matthew |

In general that is false. Where did you hear that?

NO, put the HD at the physical end of the cableing with its onboard
termination enabled.

A standard ribbon up to 5 feet will work.

It's in the HD. Enable it with a jumper.

Only at the physical endS of the cable.

You could but no need. Use the termination onboard the drive.

|
YES, both physical ends must be terminated. HOWEVER the SCSI card/HBA
should provide the termination at its end of the cable. |
