I am using an Adaptec AHA-2040UW in a Compaq Proliant 3000 to connect
to an enternal WORM device. When I boot the server, I must unload all
the drives in the WORM device otherwise the SCSI adapter tries to boot
off of it.

Is there a way to disable the SCSI adapter to prevent this?

Select the option to not load the adapter BIOS.
