Hi!

I īve installed an Adaptec 39320A-R U320 controller in Raid 1 mode, attached
with two IBM IC35L036 disks on channel A with a 68-Pin Cable with 3
connections which leaves no room for a terminator.

I installed Windows 2003 Server which worked after a few tries. Now I
experience the problem that the drives seem to work sometime but then
without any reason the system cannot boot anymore or cannot write or read
data from disk.

Did I do something wrong with the cabling (the build of the Raid worked
fine) or termination or is it maybe the driver which causes the problems?

Any help would be appreciated!

With the help of info gained in this group, I just installed a 64bit
Ultra2 card, and can tell you from the experience, you need that
terminator. Without it, the signal will most likely just be too
unreliable. Mine was running half width or throughput equivalent, with
some extremely cheap one connector cables with no termination. I was
probably lucky it worked at all. I replaced those about an hour ago
with correctly terminated 3 connector cables, and it's like night, and
day -- Quick Bench read throughput was 79MB/sec from 3 channels! The
writes were embarrassingly slow so I may need some configuration
tweaking, don't know. I'm reconfiguring right now with 64kb stripe, and
64kb line cache.

The terminator should be built into the far end of the cable. If not then
uses a 68P M-F feedthru LVD/SE termination between the end of the cable and
the drive located there:

SCSI cabling must be properly terminated.
