Connecting SE devices to a LVD chain - adapters and terminat |
|
|
Hi,
I just bought an Adaptec 2200S cheaply off Ebay and now I need to "spoil"
one of the two channels of the 2200S and run it in SE mode in order to
connect my three 50-pin CD/CD-R/DVD SCSI-drives aswell. Unfortunately
I do not have any more PCI slots availble for a second SCSI card (like e.g.
the Adaptec 29320A-R).
There seems to be a couple of more or less expensive ways to connect
50-pin SE devices, but I don't know whether to use a 50-pin cable and get
an adaptor (68-pin to 50-pin) and maybe one active internal terminator or if it's
possible to use the other 68-pin LVD cable that I already have (with built-in
active termination at one end) and to convert each one of the 50-pin connectors
of the CD/CD-R/DVD drives to 68-pin. I'd rather do the latter because there
isn't enough space between the PCI cards to mount an adaptor and the cable
connector on top directly onto the controller card.
What scsifaq.org didn't tell me either is when I use the LVD cable to connect
SE drives, do I have to worry about termination? Does the "LVD terminator"
at the end of the cable terminate the high and the low bit and everything's fine?
Have a look at the Belkin website:
<http://catalog.belkin.com/IWCatSectionView.process?IWAction=Load&Merchant_Id=&Section_Id=23>
I'd go for three of those: Part # F2N1027 (number five in the list) and it looks
like I don't need the same thing with active termination (Part # F2N1027-A,
number six in the list). Unfortunately it doesn't say whether the thing with
active termination terminates both the high and the low bit and Belkin won't
reply to my email :-(
Besides, I don't understand why leaving out the terminator makes the adaptor
about 50% more expensive - or am I missing out on something important?
Thanks in advance for your advice!

Both ways work effectively. Add up the costs and decide.

LVD cables are terminated by an LVD/SE terminator so all should work.

Yep.
Use these for the 50 pin gadgets along that 68p cable.
